If I read all the responses correctly everyone seems to be saying that you can't ever safely tow anything that weighs more than the towing vehicle. Do you think that a semi tractor weighs 40,000 pounds or more, does a Dodge Cummins V10 weigh more than three full size conversion vans on a tri axle fifth wheel? I don't think so. The important thing is GOOD BRAKES, not the size of the towing vehicle. If the towed load is not over the towing vehicle's limit and is properly loaded on a good trailer with good brakes it is safe. This doesn't make up for a bad driver. I've hauled several Power Wagons and M37s with no problems, sometimes as far as 1000 miles each way. I've used a Suburban, which weighs about 6000 pounds but has a towing capacity of 11,000 pounds. I've also used a 3/4 ton chevy extended cab. The trailer is an aluminum, tandem axle with brakes on both axles. The weight capacity is 7500 pounds. This trailer is engineered for a safe working load of 7500, it won't break in half at 7501, there is always a safety margin allowed. Bottom line is if your Explorer is rated to tow the weight of the load and you are comfortable with your driving skills do it. If not hire it done.
