This reminds me of a story I was told in Iowa last year by a man looking for a new cab for his prized flat fender. He had to try out his tow behind his Ramcharger. On the freeway near his home on a test run he experienced an oscilliation problem and before he knew it he was going backwards with two blown out tires, sans trailer. The flatfender stayed on the trailer...thru a complete roll. The Ramcharger was shortly sold...he's probally still working on the Power Wagon.
The best vintage tow vehicle I have used is a '66 W200 crew cab with a 383. There is no substitue for wheelbase (146") and weight (5,000#). My '58 W100 (wb 116"-4500#) can also pull but you have to be much more cautious with shorter wb and lighter springs.
Around here you cannot even rent a car hauler w/o a full size truck. Prudent advice.
