Hmmm...synthetic gear lube, eh? I have no experience with automotive synthetics, (Alan Bowes where are you!) but I do have some knowledge of them in aircraft and stationary equipment. If they are phosphated ester-based, they are extremely toxic to humans, and I recall a couple of deaths attributed to Mil-7808 turbine engine lube being absorbed through skin contact in the army. Dunno what the base substance for modern synthetic lube is, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly with that info.
