Think of it as trying to match road speed with engine speed. The two gears have to be going the same speed before they are going the mesh. Double clutching is the best method to do this. You can also not use the clutch and just match the speeds. Both of these take some pratice and will not be learned over night. If you feel gears "grind" the engine speed is to low or to high.
