Your truck is equipt with a clutch fan. They engage very infrequently, but will come on anytime the temp starts to climb. I am guessing that you have not heard the fan engage very many times and the conditions that you describe sound exactly like my experience. When engaged the fan draws something like 15hp, so that alone could account for your drop in speed. Not to mention you were towing up a hill in overdrive! I think that you have read more into this and there really isn't any problem at all.
