Axle scoring to direct breakage?

I was talking to an old timer yesterday about Power Wagons and he told me that "in the old days" the guys that ran PW for the phone company purposely scored the outside diameter of the axle shaft close to the wheel flange so that when the axle snapped the pieces could easily be removed and a new axle slammed in place. Apparently the phone company ran alot of duallys and carried alot of gear(weight) offroad which caused axle breakage to be a problem. In an effort to reduce the amount of down time associated with fishing out pieces of axle which broke close to the differential someone decided to control the breakage point by scoring the O.D. of the axle close to the axle flange so the pieces could easily be removed by unbolting the axle flange(first broken piece) and then reaching into the axle tube to conveniently removing the other broken piece of axle. Has any one heard of this practice? Sounds practical but risky.
