That is a good idea to keep checking back on a regular basis. You don't even have to necessarily hound them to sell. Just showing them that you have an interest in the truck and are willing to provide parts, assistance, or whatever they need while they own it, is enough for some of them to remember you when they are ready to sell.
I'll bet your friend does not let that little notebook get far from from his sight.
