Remember the old Maico, and Bultaco 2 stroke motorcycles from the '70's? It was a single 2 stroke, but you could "tune" the exaust and change the power band by cutting the long "stinger" exaust pipe behind the spark arrestor shorter, or add to it. I would think the same principal applies to a engine with multiple cylinders, you want every cylinder producing the same amount of power at the same place in the power curve.
