Headers that are "tuned" are constructed so that each pipe has the exact same amount of back pressure as any other cylinder on the engine. It would be similar to balancing and blueprinting an engine. This is why you'll see circuit racing applications with headers that closely resemble a den of snakes. The old days of simply welding a piece of pipe on a flange and joining then together at a collecter were pretty ineffiecient although they did help to decrease the resistance to exhaust gas flow. Even if you were to run straight stack exhaust pipes they would differ unless the exhaust ports were ported and polished. I'm not familiar enough with the exact science of exhaust gas flow, but I understand that an engine will run better with a balanced or "tuned" resistance rather than simply pulling the manifold or header off. Two stroke high performance engines as found in some of the larger snow machine engines have expansion chambers as opposed to mufflers to better balance and control the exhaust gases. Perhaps some one with a little more scientific insight would care to way in?
