timing light - pertronix question

i have a fairly new engine timing light that i used to time my 230 dodge in my m37. i installed a 360 in the 37 and used a pertronix 'chip' in my dist. the timing light will not pulse now. does a timing light work with a breakerless system? its possible that i fried something in my gun so im not sure where to start. how can you check a timing light?
