It might be an out-of-phase condition between the short shaft and the rear drive shaft. It can be helpful to check this on installation of a drive shaft and after each use of 4-wheel-drive. Put the transfer case and transmission in neutral and rotate the short shaft until the u-joints are in-phase with the rear drive shaft u-joints. Return the transfer case to 2-wheel-drive and your ready to go. My old 73 nearly drove me crazy until I found out about this. It fixed mine, maybe it will work for yours also. I read about it in one of the first issues of the Power Wagon Advertiser that I received years ago. I was almost ready to replace the transfer case before I found out about this fix. I figure I'm still money ahead on what the subscription to PWA costs vs. the cost of a transfer case.
