I'd say it depends on the intended purpose. If hot climates or slow going are planned, keeping some air flow in the engine compartment might be advisble.
More than half of the heat removed from an engine is through the oiling system.
Never tried running w/o a fan myself, but I suspect that a *lot* of cooling goes on in that engine compartment.
