When I was in the Army, I was an advocate of using the basic M-35 chassis in 4x4 configuration as in this picture, as well as in the 6x6 configuration to build a whole series of bodies. These trucks were as maintenance free as any we had. The only difference was the bogey rear suspension for the 6x6 and conventional suspension for the 4x4.

They would have had the weight capacity to be armored cars and still be 4x4's.

Too bad you didn't get a closer look.
