Gordon, to answer your question, I think it ran perhaps a few minutes total without oil on that bearing. It started when it stalled our for no good reason. I restarted it, ran it maybe a minute and it stalled again. I repeated this maybe 4 times, still hoping I could get a little work out of it, when it blew white smoke out of the road draft tube and stalled for good. At that point, when I tried to turn it over it, turned with difficulty and a screeching sound, so I gave up. I don't think any of the running periods was more than 1 minute. I assumed that it had blown a hole in a piston or blown the rings out and it was diesel smoke I saw, especially since I knew the compression was pretty bad and I'd been using lots of ether and wd40 to start it. I figured it was stalling because the busted piston/rings was jamming in the cylinder.

I was also having a problem with it overheating a lot and boiling the water out of the engine for several hours before that bearing seized up. I took the thermostat out but it was as if the water pump wasn't pumping. I haven't taken the pump apart yet to look at it. I'm sure the heat wasn't helping things any, though it was pretty cool when the bearing failed.

In tearing it down, I found the pistons were not damaged and no rings were broken. The cylinder clearances were in the .020 range, which probably accounts for the blowby, but there was nothing catastrophic obvious in the cylinder liners, pistons, or head. I'm now thinking the white smoke was oil burning off the overheated rod end. It must not have been terribly overheated, since only one corner of the cap was actually bare of oil. The bearing shells were not nearly worn through and the rod end and cap were somewhat burnished looking but not scratched or galled at all.

I have discovered that this is one of the least-common and least-liked John Deere engines (2010 diesel), and nothing else will come close to fitting, so I think I'm stuck with rebuilding it, at least partially. I know that just to get started I need a liner set that's only available from JD for $500 or so.
