I must aggree with Gordon; the proper fix is a full blown rebuild. However I must add the following true story.
There once was a ship at sea; a union ship, with a union crew, with many union perks. One of them was the house and quarters were to be air conditioned. If the AC was down more than 12 hours and the temperature inside the house went above 80 degrees; each crew man was to get a penalty payment of 50.00 for each day the AC was not functioning.
One day soon after leaving a Japanese shipyard for a biannual overhaul; one of the 2 AC machines lost an oil pump and stopped running. An hour later the standby unit had the same thing happen. The Chief did not relish paying 50.00/ day to everbody on the ship; nor did he like the idea of sweating all day and night. As fate would have it, we had no spare compressor and the ship was bound a port on the equator. The chief told his engineers to get the AC working till the ship returned to Japan where a new compressor would be installed. The compressor was a 60 ton 12 cylinder Carrier unit. Fortunately we had spare main and rod bearings and a new U.S. made Carrier oil pump and a grup of competent union engineers. We disassembled, cleaned up the main and rod journals with files and emery paper, reassembeld the compressor and had it back on line in 11 hours. It ran continuously for for 22 days until the new spare was received.
Moral of the story do what you have to do to keep it running.
