To answer your main question.... No. A marginal fix would be good only for a short while, and would really not be good even during that term.

Any sort of power tool you use on that rod journal will damage it. If you can get it off of there with a popsicle stick, then maybe... but I doubt that will be the case.

How long did it run that way? I find it difficult to believe that rod is OK. It could likely be reconditioned, but I don't think I would use it again without your machine shop checking it on the dial bore gauge on their rod hone, or some other .0001 reading dial bore gauge.

Reconditioning a rod involves cleaning, crack detection, then grinding (with a special grinder) some material off the rod cap and possibly the rod. Then bolting it back together and honing it back to specified diameter, with the hole being round and straight to within certain tolerances. A thorough recon would replace the bolts, too, or does this have studs and nuts?

You face a lot of labor, but you have a lot at stake.

It was someone else who once said that those old John Deeres were designed so that the average farm dog armed only with a pork chop bone could fix them. I think the pork chop bone is not enough for your dilemma.
