I am not up on the latest and greatest camera's out there but if you can afford it I would try and find the best available out there. I know others have had good luck with the floppy or cd storage systems but my thinking on them is its more moving parts to go bad. Like it or not they are prone to dirt/dust and carrying a camera around will generate different enviroments that could affect them. Bumps and drops over time I would think would mess with the mechanisms.

A memory card is the way to go. You can get bigger memory cards to hold more pictures.
As technology increases these cards hold more for less price. The card in the camera I use is slightly bigger then a postage stamp. A lot easier carrying those around then a box of cd's or floppys. They are re-usable making the camera cheaper to own and operate over time. No more buying cd's and floppys.

I would also get a camera with a rechargable battery system. Digital camera's are hard in batteries and will eat AA's up in no time at all.

Make back ups of the pictures you are wanting to keep. With th prices coming down on DVD players/writers this will make storage very easy and cheap as you can get roughly 4gig on a DVD now.
