Buy or borrow a vacumn gauge. Adjust your distributor to show maximum vacumn at idle. That will give you the best timing for power and mileage.
Note: your carb must also be adjusted to pull maximum vacum at idle and your engine rpm should be set to approx. 650 to 700 rpm with the tranny in park. You may need to set the carb first, then the idle speed, then the engine timing, to ensure that all functions are correctly set. If 'knocking' continues, advance the timing slightly from max vacumn and add an anti-knock additive. That motor (if not a CA motor) was designed to run on leaded fuel, the valves may be worn beyound any timing changes that you can make.
