I didn't mean to buy a set of #1,#2,#3 of the same thread, or a set of different classes of fits or anything. I just meant the standard set of say, #6 to 1/2" UNC and UNF taps and dies that you see everywhere. I don't think I even own a bottoming tap, and have never needed one yet, though I suppose sometime I get in a place where I can't drill the hole deeper or cut the screw shorter. As I'm sure you know the most important thing in tapping is to start the tap perfectly straight, in a drill press (turned by hand) if you can't do it well enough by eye. Turn the tap back frequently to break the chips unless it's in cast iron, and stop and blow the chips out as soon as it starts to bind up.
