I would suggest that those rescued Americans don't think of their French rescuers as 'jerks', ....
MONROVIA, Liberia - Gunfire and explosions erupted Tuesday on the northwestern outskirts of Liberia's besieged capital, even as international officials tried to broker a truce in fighting threatening the government of President Charles Taylor.

Gunfire and explosions sounded in the distance as French helicopters swooped in to rescue Europeans, Americans and other foreigners who gathered overnight at the EU and U.S. Embassy compounds. They were taken to a French warship, which was headed Tuesday to neighboring Ivory Coast.
It is the second time in a year France has orchestrated the hasty departure of foreigners from a West African nation in crisis. French troops evacuated hundreds of foreigners — including many Americans — from Ivory Coast when insurgents launched a rebellion there last fall.
