My dad was a tool keeper for the shipyard and he always kept the taps in a open wooden tray with a depression routed out for each size tap. The main thing is to keep them from clanking with the other taps and dies, and to keep them away from cloth which would snag, tear, and foul the threads. Keep them out of the weather and lightly oiled and they will work forever.
