Broken front window regulator

I am trying to take the front windshield out of my PW but the regulator is stripped. How can I get it open? Is there a special trick that will get it to open easily?
Also there is this metal knob that is screwed into the dash with a couple of wires attached to it. It doesn't look like a switch either. Does anyone know what it is? I posted this picture on my site if you want to take a look. Thanks.
