Several years ago an old mechanic friend helped me replace the rear main seal by loosening the bearing caps so he could slide a special little "rope-seal" up and over and around the crank. This is not as good as a one-piece seal, obviously, since there will be a point where the two ends of the "rope-seal" join. Check with NAPA for this product.
