OIly pans and conflicts

I am in the midst of an V8 to M37 swap and the best laid plans just got eaten by the mice (to murder a metaphor). I have a 318 LA engine but the V8 input shaft I got for the tranny doesn't fit the NP 420 I have. The bearing race is bigger and the gear is a tiny bit too big also.
I grabbed a 318 "A" engine out of another truck but the oil pan is problematic, with it's front sump.
Do the "A" 318's (1959 to 1967) and the LA 318 ('68 and later) pans interchange?
Does anybody have any idea why the input shaft and gear from one V8 NP 420 tranny wouldn't fit the hole on a 6 cyl NP 420? Did the V8's & flattie 6's have different gear rations on that front gear?
I am stumped....
Thanks
