Hi Mike,
The W300 is a 1 ton not a 1 1/4. Only the M880-5 series trucks were rated at 1 1/4, or 5 quarters as my fellow grunt explained (just what the heck is a Warrant Officer ha!ha!). Dodge probably used the W200 as a starting point because the Army contracts stated a performance goal AND a price goal, prior to bidding, so I'm guessing that this was a cost control measure, not a measure of the trucks true capacity. You have to remember that if there was a hard way to do things, the Army would invent it! The fact that Dodge started with a W200 has no bearing on it's final rating for the Army or the W200's potential in civilian life. "Lock" as used in the NP203 and other NP cases means that the case is locked in that mode, and not the axles as you mentioned above. Lastly as an FYI you are talking to a lot of former vets here and KIA does not mean 'know it all' it means "killed in action" to many of us and as such is a little disturbing to see it used. That might explain the reason not too many vets drive KIAs ???
