I learned a valuable lesson when I was 18 years old...I was charging a battery & after charging for a couple of hours I went to get it. I pulled off the leads from the battery without turning off the charger & the lead sparked igniting the hydrogen & blew one of the lead posts up missing my head by less than an inch. It went through two floors as well as the roof just like one very large bullet, so you can imagine what it would have done to my head! I had major burns from the acid, especially my eyes, but I considered myself one very luck person.
As you can imagine, I treat batteries with much more respect now.
