I talked to the guys that overhauled my 230 and they said they have noticed that the 230 crankshaft appears to be a bit softer than most. High RPMs or a rapid rev up is what wrecks em. They were telling me this as sort of a warning when I plow snow to not overspeed the engine.
As far as blowing head gaskets. I was having that problem until I... 1. had the head resurfaced and 2. applied copper coat to the gasket when I reinstalled the head and 3. used the proper torque and torque sequence. No more blow outs between 5 and 6 and no more leaks out the sides.
