Joe, I have a 77 w/ a 318. I have done all that you have to mine. I had a marking line on my dampner. It was easy to find, make sure your is good and clean so you can see it, its a cut not raised. When you find TDC your distributer shound be pointing at #1. I made the mistake when pulling my distributer of not marking it. I wound up with it pointing at #6. Took a little while to figure that one out. I got a lot of good info out of a book at NAPA.
