The idiot light is controled by a pressure switch on my 360 engine while the gauge is run by a pressure sending unit. Both the switch and gauge sender are off the same oil port on the back of the engine. If both indications are flakey, I would suspect some problem (obstruction) in the oil gallery. May not be blocking oil to any bearings, but your indications are inaccurate. Of course I may be full of bull,but its just my thoughts.
