I bought a 1990 Dodge pickup from a junkyard for parts a couple of months ago. Junkyard got it from an impound lot. It had died on the road and owner left it. After getting it hauled home , a friend and I trised to see if we could start the engine to see if it might be good. The truck had the exact symptoms as yours. My friend tore into all the wiring harnesses trying to find the trouble, Turned out the alternator had shorted out and burned out several components of the electronic ignition system.
We never did track down all the burned out components, as we really did not care about making the engine run. Just thought since the symptoms were similar, you might check out the alternator.
