I had the same problem getting the springs right on the new carb that I just put on. I had several different ones from the hardware store and they seemed to be either too long or too short. The original spring goes from the throttle linkage to a clip near the upper radiator hose.
I finally went out to my parts donor and found another clip and mounted it at the back of the engine. Then ran an additional spring to the top of the linkage of the gas pedal. It really smoothed out the action and it works really nice now.
