I saw an Illinois Department of Transportation employee operating a drag line today. He was cutting a new drainage ditch along state highway 94 through a particularly wet spot along the Edwards river bottoms. I could not say how old the machine was, but it was freshly painted in bright orange and black. The name "Little Giant" was painted in large bold lettering on the rear of the counter weight. I can not remember the last time I saw someone using one of these. It could have been a complete picture if the State Truck parked nearby had only been a Power-Wagon. I'll bet the number of guys who can operate one of these is quickly dwindling. A little more complicated than using a couple of "joysticks". It looked a little more satisfying that sitting here in front of a computer screen 10 hrs a night!
