Emergency brake band replacement

I just replaced the e-brake band. Manual calls for clearance of no MORE than .005 between band bracket and the mounting piece over which the bracket attaches. I have LESS, LIKE NONE. In fact, its so snug that the spring between the bracket and mounting piece will not push the bracket back. I can engage and disengage the brake (and band somewhat) but, even disengaged, it seems damn tight. Haven't driven the truck yet to test. Anyway, how critical is it to have some clearance between the band bracket and mounting piece? Also, should I drive and see how it feels & operates before dissassembly and trying to create more clearance, or is there a risk (fire, etc?) if I drive? By the way, the replacement band has much more (thicker) brake material than the band removed. As always, advice is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, R. Rogers (Rrogers104@aol.com)
