My '51 Plymouth Cambridge will only take a little fuel from a can if it is parked with the tank-fill side (driver's side) downhill. Then it's glub, glub, glub, overflow city. Even a minor slant in the wrong direction makes this happen. Doesn't happen when the gas cap has some altitude in relation to the rest of the rusty pig. I have learned to park on sidehills with the gas cap on the upper side, particularly on sunny days, so the gas doesn't ooze past the cap.
