Wasn't the Gnome the round "rotary"* engine; the one with the stationary crankshaft/rotating cylinders? The Owl's Head Museum in Maine has/had one of those - I witnessed it in flight several years ago! Dave Maher *"Rotary", as opposed to "Radial".
