Replace the carb brass fitting, and the steel line. The brass is a softer metal than the steel causing it to seal when you tighten it down. If you crank it down too hard it can crack also. Just give it the old German Torque (goodentight) and that's all you should need. I would not use plumbers tape. Also, I would replace any rubber fuel hose that you have with new steel line available at any auto parts store.
