I was rebuilding something old and weird once and was given the name of an old guy at an old automotive machine shop who told me he could probably find a bearing insert to adapt to just about any size journal and shell. Turned out I didn't need to use his services, but it seems reasonable to me that with care and skill a good machinist could make something else fit, especially in a relatively low-stress engine like this. Might be worth asking around.
