You know there are two of these motors for sale on this Forum in northern Arizona recently? The Mitsubishi 6DR5 is an excellent motor, 5 rings, dry replaceable sleeves, 110HP@3700, 184 ft-lb@2000-2200, 35" fan to back of block, SAE#3 and Dodge flywheels/flywheel housings (and maybe others) available. Probably turbochargeable with pne the many excellent Australian made kits for the Landcruiser 2H series, which is 3980cc 6cyl and governed at 3600 rpm, therefore very close volumetric characteristics. I'd estimate 40-45% power/torque increase with turbo, 60-65% with intercooler also. The Dodge/Mitsu setup was ridiculed and decried, rather predictably, for its' lack of power. In most of the rest of the world, a 6cyl 4L diesel would be aconsidered a powerhouse in a 7000-9000 lb GVW truck. Of course, the fact that it had a wide ratio 4spd. The close ratio NP435 has ratios of 4.56, 2.28, 1.31, 1.00. If an overdrive is added or a 5 spd is substituted, then axle gearing with normal 31-32" tires can be raised from 3.31 or 3.35 to 4.10 or 4.56. It's amazing what proper gearing can do in this sort of situation. The extreme case of early 70s US engineering: 2speed Powerglide automatic in a Impala sedan with 396 ci V8. Offshore engineering: BMW540i with 4.4L DOHC V8, close ratio 6spd. More gears really help heavy trucks move with smallish diesels. So would a turbo.
This motor will NOT fit even a WM300 without mutilating surgery. The rear-of-radiator to firewall distance in a M37 is <32", too short.
If you are considering a newer Dodge with this motor and want more specific info re gearing ideas or addresses/phone #s for turbo places, don't hesitate to contact me.
