This is excellent advice. The quality of the piston surface is going to tell the tale here. If it is pitted and worn, then a timing/detonation problem is most likely the cause of failure. Detonation usually has a focus or foci where it happens most and these areas generally fail first. The only odd thing is that most detonation tends to happen at the edges of the piston, and not in the center but it could be a flat-head thing. Consequently, if you see the remains of an imprint on the otherwise undamaged piston head, then it's most likely that you sucked up some FOD (Foreign Object Damage) at some point. In any case, follow Alan's advice for clean-up and repair.
