Thanks for all the ideas. I took the carb apart again and the bowl was full of water. I guess pulling
the choke out increased the fuel/water ratio enough to keep it running despite the water. The filter
was also full of crap. I don't think I ran the truck more than an hour since the last time I had
the carb apart, so I was really surprised. I don't know how the water got in, but it's been raining
all day all winter here, so basically everything has water in it by now. I put an old-fashioned
glass sediment bowl and screen on the fuel pump so hopefully that will catch most of the water and
dirt. When I had the carb apart I noticed another adjustable needle valve which I hadn't seen before.
The screw for it is underneath a little cover, and it's not the idle mixture. Anyway, I cleaned the
bowl out, put the thing back together and it ran alot better but still died if I opened the throttle
quickly. So I tweaked the mystery adjustment a bit and now it runs like a champ. Okay, like a tired
champ, but I can at least drive it around the block with the choke in.

Any ideas what that extra needle adjusts? It goes straight down through the top cover into a little
port in the bowl.
