As mentioned, vapor lock or fuel percolation are possibilities. In addition to things already mentioned, try closing off the manifold heat valve (if it isn't rusted shut), and make sure there is a thick fiber gasket between the carb base and the manifold. These steps (especially the thick gasket) will help prevent fuel from percolating inside the carburetor when you shut off the engine. The carburetor actually heats up when you shut the engine off, since there is no more cooling air being drawn down through the carb body. If the carb body gets too hot, the fuel can percolate/boil out of the carb and down into the carb throat and manifold, where it evaporates quite quickly on the hot surfaces. It also fills carb passages with vapor. Eventually, the carb will cool down, but even then you have to crank the engine a while to refill the carb bowl to the point where you can start the engine.

There are several other possibilities as well, but this is a very common problem, especially if the thick gasket has been left out.
