: PROUD NEW OWNER OF 1953 DODGE M37. HOW DO YOU CHECK THE GENERATOR/REGULATOR? NOBODY IN MY AREA CAN OFFER AND ADVICEOR HELP. IS THE 24-VOLT SYSTEM THE BEST OR SHOULD I CHANGE TO 12-VOLT. THE WIFE WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP.
Due to the system being sealed, you will need an adapter kit to measure output. They are available on the web.

Should you convert - depends on how authentic you want your M-37 to be. I have seen 12 volt conversions that are good (requires new oil pump, distributor, bulbs, starter (?), and an alternator), and some that are really bad.
You can get a 24 volt alternator which will be a one wire hookup and requires little else.

Brakes - I think Tim Petersen (someone correct me if I'm wrong)makes a great disk brake conversion for the these trucks. You will have to send him your hubs to be machined. Since you are planning on adding power steering, you might as well send all four hubs to
get machined, that way in the future you can add rear disk brakes (so you M-37 will stop like a Porche 911 - it just won't go as fast until you stuff that hemi under the hood). There have been many people who have added power steering to there rigs, so I will defer
to their expertise.

Much of this information is available in the Power Wagon Advertiser Magazine pubplished by Gordon Maney. I know I have read about disk brakes, power steering, alternator conversions (m-37 specific), and how to fab a hard top.

You can find information on the charging system in the ORD manuals for the M-37.

Hope this helps. Congrats onthe New Toy.
