: Has anyone heard of any success stories using SU carburetors on flathead sixes? I've heard of some Toyota Landcruiser owners getting "spectacular" results when they bolted three SUs to their six-bangers. Apparently, the SU's variable venturi design can provide precise fuel metering and good atomization over a wide load and RPM range. They tend to maintain relatively high-velocity flows through the venturi...even at low RPM and under varying loads. From what little I've heard, the Landcruiser engines received a considerable torque boost over the entire RPM range, about a 50HP high-end increase, and improved fuel economy. The most impressive gains were in low-end torque. I haven't yet found any detailed technical specs for this particular application. I'll try to locate an article that I saw on this subject. In the meantime, if anyone knows of any good articles or other sources, please post it, and I'll do the same.

Alan; as an auto mechanic of 25 years, I have done a lot of drivabilty and emission type repair. Most of my experience has been with stock equiptment, but i have seen many carb conversions. I just had one in the shop yesterday and this truck followed true to form. It had noticably more power, but the emissions were way off.We were able to get this truck by an eimission test, but I would not consider this truck to be too efficient. Most of the time there is this type of trade off unless you do some engine work. What we need is an on board computor, electronic spark control, and electronic fuel injection. This is the best way to increase horse power and increase fuel economy, but even then the system would have matched to the engine. There are companys doing this stuff, but I haven't herd of one for a flathead yet.I did see one with central fuel injecton for an AMC so we can't too far behind.
