: any disadvantage to the 4.89 gears?

Great forum. just discovered it. First time since 1, Jan 1980 (my first M37) to enjoy the truck without smelling like canvas.

Both trucks here are 5.83's with diff tires.

My main M37 is average running condition with everything working blackout lights etc... but 12v and 9.00 x 16 military. The truck is great as long as you avoid asphalt or any speed over 45-50.

My brother's is similar running condition and 24v with 11.00 x 16 NATO Michelins. With an "average" flathead six his truck slows much faster on hills and never seems to have the correct gear while crawling around off-road.
I can only assume the 4.89's would be more of the same unless you had a stronger flathead (like the ones balanced , bored, and with cam at Vintage Power Wagons) or another re-power either diesel or V-8.

The big question is how are you going to use the truck and what is the compromise Speed,Cash, Power,Character...I think we all need a couple of them...right?

Jim
