Split rims have their advantages. If you are way out in the boonies you can tear the tire down with the proper tools. Try prying an 8 ply tire off a solid rim! Regarding tire types, it is my understanding that the Gateway Buckshot mudders only come in 6-ply. Denman makes an 8-ply bias with the same tread pattern called the Gumbo Mudder.
