In addition to using a detergent oil (which is pretty hard not to do if you're using multi-grade oil), the key to keeping an engine sludge-free is to use the proper thermostat. If an engine runs too cool, the oil spray/vapor and water vapor in the crankcase will condense on the cooler surfaces as dirty hydrogenated oil...a kind of "black margarine." Keeping the engine block at the proper operating temperature will prevent most of this condensation from taking place.
