: I have an old engine block which I purchased, but the pistons are bonded to the engine block. The block looks like it is in good condition, but I have been unable to remove the pistons. I have tried dry ice and a hammer, a hammer and a chissel, lye (it did melt a hole in one of the pistons), and the good old cure coke-a-cola. So far no luck, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi,

You didn't say if you started off by using penetrating oil
and a conventional method.

Try this.

There is 2 penetrating fluids that are of a much higher ability.
One is called Kroil and the other is Break Free.

Look around and find some.

Fill the cylinder with this stuff above the piston line and let it sit for a few days. Turn the block over and do the same from the bottom.

Get a piece of OAK or ASH wood and use a
heavy mallet to try to move the piston a little. If it moves,
coad the bottom of the cylinder with Anti-sieze and carefully tap it out.

If it doesn't move you can then try to destroy the piston to remoove it.

Grind near the piston edge with a dremel
grinding point at many places along the piston
head to ruin the stability of the metal form.

Then try the same procedure to tap it out.

I hope you really want this block. Its going to take some work to get those pistons out.

In the end your going to have to sleeve it anyway to get a new piston fit.

Good luck,

Gerry
